Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
We clean and restore Guardsman registers and grilles across Dallas, and if a register has failed, we stock a range of Guardsman-compatible replacements on our trucks. A typical register and grille cleaning or replacement runs between $45 and $180 per register installed in Dallas, depending on size, finish, and how much restoration work is needed. Most owners first notice the problem when a register won’t sit flush in the floor or ceiling opening, the damper wheel stops turning, or years of Dunkin’ coffee spills and dust have fused the finish so badly that cleaning no longer brings it back.
Guardsman registers are built heavier than the box-store versions most Dallas homes came with, so they’re usually worth saving. When they can be saved, we clean them properly, not just wipe the face. When they can’t, we match the size, finish, and damper style so the replacement doesn’t look like an obvious patch job. Either way, you’ll know the price before we touch the first screw.
Which Guardsman Models This Applies To
Guardsman registers and grilles come in a few distinct lines: the standard stamped-steel series (most common in Dallas slab foundations), the heavier cast-aluminum series (usually found in higher-end builds in neighborhoods like Preston Hollow and Lakewood), and a wood-core series that gets installed flush with hardwood floors. The quickest way to identify what you have is to flip the register over. Guardsman stamps the model series and size on the back frame or on the damper blade itself. If the stamp is worn off, measure the opening: Guardsman residential registers come in widths of 2¼”, 4″, 6″, and 8″, with lengths from 10″ to 14″ in two-inch increments. Measure the actual hole in the floor or wall, not the faceplate, because the faceplate overhangs the opening by about an inch on every side.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Guardsman specifically: the OEM damper blade is balanced so it stays where you set it when the HVAC kicks on. Cheaper aftermarket versions tend to rattle open or shut on the first cycle. We’ll tell you when a quality aftermarket equivalent will do the job and when you should stick with OEM. The honest answer is that it depends on the register location. A return-air grille hidden behind a sofa can use a quality aftermarket match. A floor register in your entryway, where every guest who walks in your front door will see it? That one should probably stay Guardsman.

Signs Your Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing
- The damper wheel spins but the blade doesn’t move. The stamped rivet that connects the wheel to the damper blade has sheared. This is the single most common failure we see in Dallas, and it’s caused by years of repeated adjustments plus the constant vibration of the blower. Once that rivet goes, the register can’t control airflow anymore.
- The register won’t sit flush in the opening. This usually means the spring clips or the screw tabs have bent or broken. In older Dallas homes with settling slab foundations, the opening itself can go slightly out of square, which then stresses the clips every time the register gets removed for cleaning.
- Persistent rust or corrosion on the faceplate. Dallas humidity is real, especially in homes near White Rock Lake or any property with a crawlspace. Once rust has pitted through the finish, no amount of cleaning will restore it. The register needs media blasting and refinishing, or replacement.
- Whistling or rattling when the system runs. A loose damper blade or a missing felt gasket will make the register sing every time the blower cycles. It’s not just annoying; the vibration wears the mounting points faster and can eventually crack the frame.
- Visible buildup that won’t come off with standard cleaning. If the register has been painted over by a previous owner, covered in decades of kitchen grease film, or caked with pet hair and dust that’s bonded to the surface, basic scrubbing won’t help. That’s when a proper chemical strip and refinish, or a replacement, is the right call.

For Dallas homeowners, here’s what you can expect to pay for Guardsman register and grille work with us:
- Standard cleaning and reinstallation: $45 to $75 per register, including removal, cleaning of the frame and damper, and re-seating with new felt gasket if needed.
- Deep restoration (rust removal, strip, refinish): $85 to $130 per register, depending on finish type and damage severity.
- Replacement with OEM Guardsman register: $95 to $180 per register installed, including the part, removal of the old register, and secure installation.
- Replacement with quality aftermarket match: $55 to $110 per register installed, when a visual match isn’t critical.
The range depends on size, finish, and accessibility. A standard 2¼” x 12″ floor register is at the low end. A custom-sized wood-core register or a cast-aluminum piece that needs color matching will land at the top. You’ll get a written price for the whole job before we start, and every register we install or restore is covered under the same 365-Day Done Right Promise as our duct cleaning work. If the register fails within the warranty period, we come back and make it right. Dale Whitmore has been around long enough to know that a register that rattles on day 90 is the same as a register that was never fixed.
DIY or Call Us?
Registers and grilles are low-risk parts to work on compared to, say, a furnace or a high-tension garage door, so a careful homeowner can absolutely remove one for cleaning. Kill the HVAC at the thermostat, lift the register out, vacuum both sides, and wipe with a degreaser. That’s the easy version, and it works fine for light dust. What goes wrong in DIY is when the register has been painted into the floor, the screw heads are stripped, or the damper linkage is broken. Forcing a painted register free will take chunks out of your hardwood or tile. And a broken damper linkage can’t be fixed with pliers; it needs the rivet replaced, which requires a proper pop-rivet tool and the right diameter rivet. If the register is stuck, stripped, or mechanically failed, call us at (361) 314-5449 and we’ll handle it without damaging your flooring.
FAQs
In Dallas, a well-cared-for Guardsman register lasts 15 to 20 years or more. The two factors that shorten that lifespan the most are moisture exposure (crawlspace homes, slab condensation, nearby lake humidity) and physical damage from vacuuming or foot traffic. A register in a hallway with heavy foot traffic will fail faster than one under a bed. Call (361) 314-5449 if you want us to assess whether yours are worth restoring or should be replaced.
It depends on what failed. A sheared damper rivet is repairable in about ten minutes. A bent spring clip is usually fixable. But a rusted-through faceplate, a cracked frame, or a damper blade that’s warped from heat exposure is generally not worth repairing. We’ll give you an honest read when we look at it, and the estimate is free whether you repair or replace.
For a typical Dallas home with eight to twelve registers, cleaning takes about an hour. Replacing every register in the house usually takes two to three hours, depending on how many need new mounting holes or shims to sit flush. We schedule the work in a defined arrival window and you’ll have a written price before we begin.
We keep the most common Guardsman sizes and finishes on the truck – the 2¼” x 10″, 2¼” x 12″, and 4″ x 12″ stamped-steel series in standard white, tan, and silver finishes, plus return-air grilles in common sizes. Unusual sizes, custom finishes, or wood-core pieces usually take a few days to source. For context, we work on houses with Lennox, Trane, and Carrier equipment, but Guardsman registers are the ones homeowners most often want matched exactly because the finish quality is visibly better.
Kestrel Air Duct Dallas is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with Guardsman. We work on and install their products because Dallas homeowners ask for them by name.
